Poached pears
SERVES: PREP: COOK: PRINT CONVERSIONS

I always seem to have over ripe pears in my fruit bowl, I always buy too many and I have to use them up quickly before they turn to mush.

So I poached my pears the other day in in a beautiful syrup and served them for dessert with a scoop of ice cream. They would be equally good just with a dollop of creamy greek yoghurt for breakfast.
Poached pears with star anise, cinnamon & vanilla
Serves 4
You’ll need:
4 ripe pears ( I used packham’s), peeled, cored & halved – try to keep stems intact
1 star anise
1 cinnamon stick
1 vanilla bean, halved
4 cups cold water
2 cups sugar
  1. In medium sized saucepan bring spices, sugar and water to a simmer.
  2. Reduce heat slightly & add pears and cook partially covered for 15 – 20 minutes or until tender.
  3. Leave pears to cool in syrup & serve when ready.
