I’m a professional food stylist and currently prepping my own series of cookbooks and a cooking show. In my food catering business, Mishka La Mushka, I catered private and corporate functions and events big and small, designed food in hat boxes for the Spring Racing Carnival and created too many themed kids birthday parties to mention. But now I love food styling and sharing my fun food ideas with mums wanting to create restaurant-quality meals at home, for kids and family. So let’s get cooking!

This extremely moist and delicious chocolate cake recipe came to me courtesy of a very good friend’s mum.

I’ve never really been a big chocolate cake fan, mainly because I’ve found them either way to dense and rich or dry and boring. This delightful cake is neither of these things and is an absolute cracker of a recipe.

You'll Need

  • 250 g butter
  • 4 tbs good quality cocoa1 cup water
  • 1 cup sour cream or yoghurt
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp bicarb soda
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 2 cups sugar



  • 60 g butter
  • 2 tbs cocoa
  • 3 tbs milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 cups icing sugar
  • chocolate shavings (optional)


Heat butter, cocoa and water and stir until boiling.


Remove from the heat and add sugar, flour, bicarb soda, eggs and sour cream. Mix gently by hand.


Bake in a well greased and lined slice tin at 190C for 20 minutes. Allow to cool.


For the frosting, bring all ingredients except the icing sugar to the boil. Cool and add the icing sugar and mix well.
Ice the cake and sprinkle with chocolate shavings. Cut into squares and serve.
